Dreams
Can Come True
DREAM Act 2012
1. The DREAM Act promises to dramatically increase the pool of highly
qualified recruits for the U.S. Armed Forces.
2. The DREAM Act is supported by 70 percent of likely voters and by
leaders in education, the military, business and religious orders.
3. The DREAM Act is a great return on money we have already invested
and will prepare the country for the global economy.
4. Passage of the DREAM Act will reduce high school dropout rates
and enable more students to attend college.
5. Passage of the DREAM Act will increase revenues in our
communities.
As the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) has pointed out, “The DREAM
Act would create an unprecedented opportunity for many young people to
step onto a path to permanent legal status, a path that would require them
to demonstrate either a significant investment in their human capital or
service to the United States through membership in the armed forces.”
There are an estimated 2.1 million undocumented children and young
adults in the United States who might be eligible for legal status under
the DREAM Act. About 65,000 undocumented high school seniors who graduate
each year have the potential to be doctors, nurses, researchers, teachers,
and entrepreneurs but are unable to go to college, join the military or
work. Many professions, such as that of a teacher, require applicants to
fingerprinted, which means a social security number must be
submitted-undocumented immigrants do not have one. |
